Weatherford, OKC, and Clinton
August 10–14, 2026
This year marks the one hundredth anniversary of historic Route 66. The fabled number was retired when the route was replaced by a series of interstates. But people still seek out what is left of it, and of course towns honor it with signs. Along Weatherford it was replaced by I-40, and the most recent version of the road is now an access road beside it. Of course I visited the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, just west of Weatherford.

The main part of the museum is divided into decades — the cultural features, vehicles, etc., from each.

One souvenir I got was a commemorative drinking cup at Lucille’s. Lucille Hamons was nicknamed “The Mother of the Mother Road." She ran a filling station, diner, and hotel on Route 66 in Hydro, just east of Weatherford, for 59 years. The current restaurant and hotel are on Route 66 at Weatherford. The Rotary Club meets there, so I was Torrey’s guest there for lunch. They also have a restaurant in Clinton, so we ate a late lunch there after my visit to the museum.

I usually buy a Christmas ornament or two on my trips, so I got one for Route 66.
