Ferry Ride to Sweden
June 24, 2019
On Monday moring after breakfast at the church, we loaded up the bus and rode to nearby Frederikshavn, where we caught the ferry to Gothenburg, Sweden. Interestingly, the city uses both the German and English spelling "Gothenburg" and the Swedish "Götenborg" officially. Supposedly to be more international, they turn the "ö" sidways on signs and get "Go:tenborg." In Davidson we know the town as the home of the Czerapowicz family. Chris was an outstanding basketball player here, and now is continuing his pro career in Russia, after stints in Sweden and Poland. His little brothers came over many times to watch him play, and now David is a Wildcat, about to begin his sophomore year. I told David in April that I'd be heading to Sweden this summer, and he asked me where. I wasn't sure, so I told him I thought we would mostly be in Stockholm. I had never heard of Örebro at that point.
As you can see from these few pictures, Gothenburg looks like a busy and prosperous place. Population is over 500,000, so it is Sweden's second largest city. It has the largest harbor in Scandinavia. Besides trade and shipping, manufacturing is a mainstay. Volvo was founded there and still is a major employer.
The view from the ferry was about all the look we got. Shortly after we docked, we boarded our bus, which then took us to Örebro.
